L is for the Islets of Langerhans
The islets of Langerhans are named for Paul Langerhans (1847-1888) who, like a number of others in this series, died prematurely due to now preventable illnesses--in his case tuberculosis at the age of forty-one. He was the first to identify the pancreatic cells which produce insulin.
